      What is an Electronic Travel Authorization?

      An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an entrance essential for visa-exempt foreign nationals who are traveling to Canada by air. An eTA is electronically connected to a traveller’s passport.

       

      • Why do I need an Electronic Travel Authorization?

      If you’re planning to travel to Canada from a visa-exempt country, then you must have an eTA to travel to Canada. You don’t need an eTA if you’re traveling with a valid U.S passport to enter Canada.

      The following people are exempted from needing an eTA:

       

      • Those people who already have a valid visa for entry into Canada.
      • Anyone who enters through land or water.
      • Military personnel on formal assignment in Canada.
      • Students with a valid study permit issued in Canada on or after August 1, 2015.
      • Pilots, air traffic controllers, and accident investigators.
      • Temporary Foreign Workers with a valid work visa in Canada that expires on or after August 1, 2015.
      • Residents of and visitors to St. Pierre and Miquelon who are French nationals.
      • Persons with legitimate status in Canada who come from the United States or St. Pierre and Miquelon.
      • Diplomats who have received accreditation.
      • Canadian citizens and dual citizens (provided you are travelling on a Canadian passport)
      • Permanent residents of Canada (you need your PR card or point of entry documentation)
      • Citizens of the United States (US permanent residents, or green card holders, DO require an eTA when travelling by air)

       

      • How to get an Electronic Travel Authorization?

      Through the Canadian federal government official website, you can apply for an eTA.

      Requirements before you apply:

       

      • Authentic passport.
      • To apply, use the online form.
      • After completing the form, pay $7 CAD for your eTA.
      • Valid email address to get an email about your eTA application.
      • Submit your documents before your application can be approved.

       

      What is the best time to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization?

       

      Canadian Government advises to get an eTA before you’re planning to book your flight to Canada.

      However, some applicants get their eTA approval via a gadget smartphone. It is a simple online process. All you require is the best internet connection. In some cases, the email authorization only took a few minutes to process, and some requests can take a few days to process.
